Smokin’ Fez Monkeys at Lakewood Library!

The Smokin’ Fez Monkeys will perform at Lakewood Public Library (LPL) on April 1st.  Really, we’re not fooling!  The modern jug band, with its old-fashioned ideas about having fun, should do for the LPL’s “Sunday With Friends” musical series what the Wienermobile did for the automobile. The band will play a grab bag of instruments and it’s said they play their hearts out if you just stamp your feet loud enough!  The free event starts at 1:00 p.m. at Lakewood Public Library, 15425 Detroit Avenue, in the Main Library Auditorium.  No reservations are needed.

The free “Sunday with the Friends” series is open to everybody, thanks to funding from the Friends of Lakewood Public Library. To learn more about the event or becoming a Friends of LPL member, call 216.226.8275 ext. 127.

Featured Event… Beatlesque Hunger Relief Fundraiser in Lakewood

On Saturday, January 28th, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., area musicians and community leaders will take the stage at the Lakewood Masonic Temple, 15300 Detroit Avenue, for “All You Need Is Love (and Food).”  They’ll take turns performing and singing Beatles songs to help raise food and funds for Trinity Lakewood Community Outreach (TLCO), a local hunger-relief group.

Some of the event’s confirmed musicians are Joey Beltram, Matt Charboneau, Sheela Das, Bobbie Hendrick, Charlie Mosbrook, Rachel Shortt, Christopher Solt, Katie Stadler, Mike Uva, Jason Weiner, Rick Williams and Terrell Williams.

Suggested admission is a $10 donation plus a can of food.  The Masonic Temple will be set up coffeehouse-style for a casual, relaxed evening with Root Café providing coffee and home-baked sweets and treats (included in the admission donation). All proceeds will go to support TLCO’s hunger-relief efforts.

TLCO was founded in 2009, as the community outreach arm of Trinity Lutheran Church of Lakewood.  TLCO’s mission is “to foster a healthy community through collaboration, education and meeting basic needs.”

Featured Event… County Exec Ed FitzGerald at SPJ Ethics Luncheon

With the trial of former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora on federal corruption charges starting, former County Auditor Frank Russo seeking to avoid a 21-year prison sentence, and more than 50 others having pled guilty to or been convicted of engaging in corruption in County government, the Cleveland Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) will present a public program to review the County’s efforts to create a more ethical culture.

Cuyahoga County Executive and former Lakewood Mayor Edward FitzGerald will be the featured speaker at an ethics luncheon-program on Wednesday, January 11th. Government reporter Harlan Spector of The Plain Dealer and Lynda Mayer of the League of Women Voters will be featured panelists at the event; both are experts on the County’s new ethics ordinance.

Today’s PD reports that, going into the second year of his term, FitzGerald has not hired an internal auditor as is required by the new government’s charter.

Lunch begins at noon and the program runs from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the City Club of Cleveland, 850 Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland. Luncheon tickets are $20 each.
